A local environmental group hosted a day of lessons on tree stewardship and street tree care for community members of the Greenpoint area earlier this month.
Greening Greenpoint, the name of the project, gathered at the American Playground on Franklin Street and Milton Street to teach volunteers how to care for trees surrounding the park on July 16, as part of its mission to develop a forestry plan for the neighborhood.
“The project will increase tree canopy cover and promote healthy, long-lived trees to increase the environmental benefits that trees offer,” the site reads.
After learning stewardship techniques, like weeding, mulching, and watering, Greening Greenpoint participants practiced on trees within the park’s vicinity, and were given tools to take home to care for trees in their neighborhoods.
Launched in the fall of 2015, the project has a three-year plan in mind, which includes mapping all the trees in Greenpoint and planting over 500 new trees on streets and parks, which would eliminate 13,000 pounds of local air pollution, according to the Greening Greenpoint site.
Greening Greenpoint is funded by the Greenpoint Community Environmental Fund, which the state attorney general’s office and the Department of Environmental Conservation allocate money to.
There are 3,517 trees in Greenpoint, and 97 different tree species, according to NYC Parks.
