Traditional Polish Dumpling Restaurant Opens in Greenpoint

Nov. 7, 2019. By Shane O’Brien

A new traditional Polish dumping restaurant opened in Greenpoint earlier this week and its owners hope to fill a gap in the Polish market.

Pierozek had its soft opening at 592 Manhattan Ave. yesterday and will have its grand opening at the beginning of December, according to Alexandra Siwiec, the restaurant’s co-owner.

The restaurant mainly sells pierogi, a type of Polish dumpling wrapped around a sweet or savory filling. However, it also offers a variety of croquettes and borscht, a traditional Polish beet soup.

Pierogis at the new Greenpoint restaurant cost between $10 and $12 and come with a wide range of fillings, like blueberries, pork shoulder, spinach and sauerkraut.

Pierozek also offers a selection of beers on its menus that are priced at $7 and $8 a pint.

The restaurant is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday thru Sunday and is capable of seating 35 customers at any one time, Siwiec said. It also offers a catering service.

Siwiec opened Pierozek with her husband, Radek Kucharski, and they felt that Greenpoint was missing an authentic pierogi restaurant. Greenpoint is sometimes referred to as “Little Poland” due to its large population of Polish immigrants.

Kucharski grew up in Poland and ate regularly in a famous pierogi restaurant called PierozeQ in Czestochowa, which Pierozek is modelled after. Siwiec said that it was always her husband’s dream to set up a pierogi restaurant in the United States.

Siwiec and Kucharski had help setting up the restaurant from Marzena Gesiarz and Zofia Kusmierska, who are pierogi makers at PierozeQ.

Gesiarz and Kusmierska traveled to Greenpoint and trained the restaurant’s seven staff members for several weeks on how to make the traditional Polish food, according to Siwiec.
