Swap Your Reusable Items at Williamsburg ‘Stop ‘N’ Swap’ This Month

A nonprofit group is offering an opportunity to donate unwanted goods and pick up a few new items at a community event next weekend.

GrowNYC will be hosting a free ‘Stop ‘N’ Swap’ event at the Williamsburg Community Center, located at 195 Graham Ave., from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. on March 16.

The organization, known for its various green initiatives throughout the city, began hosting Swap ‘N’ Stops as a way to reduce waste and promote reuse, with a goal of hosting one in each of the city’s 59 community districts.

The event, according to the organizers, is an environmentally friendly resort to tossing out unwanted but good items that would otherwise go to landfills. In New York City, the average household discards about 2,000 pounds of waste a year, the group says.

For the event, GrowNYC is asking people to bring in unwanted items that are still in good working condition, including books, toys, clothing, housewares, and electronics. Donations will be taken in at the designated drop-off tables, sorted, and placed out on display for others to pick up and take home.

Items that will not be accepted for donation include furniture, large items, expired or open food, unsealed personal care products, medicine, dirty or ripped clothing, fabric scraps, incomplete toys and games, non-working electronics, tube TVs, magazines, and sharp objects.

Dropping off items is not required to be able to take home some new found treasures. Attendees, however, are limited to visiting six Swap ‘N’ Stops per year to ensure that everyone has a chance to experience the events.

More information about upcoming Stop N’ Swaps and items that can be brought is available on the GrowNYC website.

The theater reopened this week following a five-year restoration and conversion project back to its original entertainment use, after decades spent as an extremely ornate college basketball court.
