A new restaurant will be opening in Greenpoint this weekend inside of boutique hotel Franklin Guesthouse.

The cozy new-American restaurant, located at 214 Franklin St., will feature a wide ranging seasonal menu that may change from week to week, depending on the seasonality and quality of produce.

General Manager Steven Dougherty says the restaurant is currently planning to serve croquettes, a branzino dish, a ribeye cap, and a large-scale shrimp dish, among other items. Dougherty says that keeping menu items locally sourced is a high priority, referencing their market salad which will feature produce procured from the McGolrick Park farmers market.

At the bar, diners will find a variety of wines, beers and handcrafted cocktails, including a signature El Sancho cocktail, made with mezcal, habanero, campari and apricot.

Dougherty says that everyone involved in spearheading the restaurant, including himself, Chef Bryan Noury, and hotel co-owners Joe Torres and Simon Whitley, are from the neighborhood. The goal of the restaurant is to provide a welcoming yet high end spot that will slip into the local landscape and provide residents with a reliable restaurant to grab a bite to eat. Every detail down to the name of the restaurant is meant to encapsulate this, Dougherty said.

“The name is much more built around the idea of hospitality, just like you’re coming into our house and mother’s taking care of you,” Dougherty said. “You’re going to bust out the best glassware you have, you’re going to bus out the best plates. Everything’s going to be clean, everyone’s going to be super nice. Everything we do here is made from scratch, just like you’re at your house.”

Whitley and Torres operate two other boutique hotels in the Greenpoint area: the Box House Hotel, and the Henry Norman Hotel.

Franklin Guesthouse, which opened in 2016, originally leased out their restaurant space to a third party, who opened BarGlory. When the restaurant operators unexpectedly ended their contract with the hotel several months ago, Dougherty says they decided to take that opportunity to run the restaurant themselves.

“We had started a hospitality group at the Box House and so this was the perfect opportunity to open our own restaurant here,” Dougherty said. “We came in, we gutted the entire space. Everything is brand spanking new.”

MADRE will open its doors on Friday, June 7, and will offer dinner service Wednesdays through Sundays.
