Local non-profit FABSCRAP is hosting a sustainable market this weekend, featuring designers who have crafted clothing and accessories out of upcycled fabrics purchased from FABSCRAP.

Starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday March 23, shoppers will be able to browse the pop-up market happening at The Canvas, located at 132 Bedford Ave. in Williamsburg.

FABSCRAP, a textile recycling non-profit, works with local designer brands and interior design companies to recover unwanted fabrics that the companies would otherwise send to landfills. They have cultivated relationships with nearly 300 brands, including big names like Marc Jacobs, J Crew, and Mara Hoffman, and are able to sell the unused high-end fabrics to other designers at a much lower price.

At the market, designers will be offering creations of all kinds, from bowties to wallets to clothing, and even handbags and jewelry. Some designers will also be offering on-site customizations of pieces, using hand painting and embroidery.

“There’s going to be a bit of everything,” said Jessica Schreiber, Executive Director of FABSCRAP.

FABSCRAP will also be bringing in some of their favorite fabrics to sell by the yard. In the spirit of sustainability, shopper are asked to bring their own bags to the event.

Shoppers can also bring in unwanted clothes to drop off with the Goodwill’s donation program, and a clothing swap organized by The Canvas will be happening in the back of the event space. Any clothing items that aren’t in good enough shape to be donated will be taken in by FABSCRAP to be shredded and recycled.

While FABSCRAP has hosted pop-up fabric sales in the past, Schreiber says this will be the first event of this scale that the nonprofit has put on. If the market is successful, they hope to be able to continue hosting more markets annually or seasonally.
