An annual horror film festival kicks off in Greenpoint Thursday that features eight days of more than 60 movie screenings, talks and events.
FEARnyc will run from Oct. 24 through Halloween, Oct. 31 at Film Noir Cinema, located at 22 Meserole Ave.
Not for the faint of heart, the festival features a mix of classics and film premieres — all in the horror film genre, as well as discussions with writers and directors and an awards ceremony.
There will be a 35th anniversary screening of “Nightmare on Elm Street” and a premiere of the new 4K restoration of George A. Romero and Dario Argento’s “Two Evil Eyes.”
On Halloween night, a special 60th anniversary screening of Vincent Price’s “The Tingler” will be paired with a live rendition of producer William Castle’s legendary 1950s movie theater gimmicks, including buzzing chairs, fainting audience members and more.
Also on the line up is a screening of Carl Dreyer’s 1932 silent classic “Vampyr” featuring a live performance of an original score by The Flushing Remonstrance.
The festival will offer several Q&As with featured filmmakers including “Terrifier” writer/director Damien Leone and the writers and producers of “The Last Drive-In,” as well as general panel discussions on horror filmmaking, queer horror and fan films.

The theme of the film festival this year is “Real/Surreal” and dozens of new films will be premiered with a focus on real problems in society today.
This includes “everything from the dark underbelly of social media to conversion therapy to mass shootings,” FEARnyc founder and director John Capo said.
“Our selections this year demonstrate that horror filmmakers in 2019 are moving away from traditional let’s-kill-some-pretty-women tropes and focusing instead on the real life horrors that affect so many of us,” Capo added.
The film festival will also celebrate outstanding horror filmmakers at an awards ceremony at The Green Room at The Yotel in Manhattan Wednesday, Oct. 30. The festival organizers will posthumously award producer Debra Hill of “Halloween,” “Escape from New York,” “Clue” and “The Fog” the FEARnyc Legacy Honor.
Organizers will present the FEARnyc Trailblazer Award to the team behind “Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror,” the first documentary on the history of African Americans in the horror genre.
