A free ferry service will be shuttling passengers back and forth from Greenpoint to Pier 15 beginning tomorrow, in a three-day celebration hosted by Mozilla for the launch of their new Firefox browser.
Mozilla’s ferry will shuttle riders between Pier 15/ South Street Seaport in Manhattan to Greenpoint’s India Street terminal from Nov. 14 to Nov. 16. The ferry will take off every 30 minutes from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m., and again from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The event aligns with Firefox “shipping” their new browser, the Firefox Quantum, on Nov. 14 with a promise to be twice as fast as their prior browser.
“To celebrate, we’ll be taking over a fast ferry in NYC to get people to what they love (or where they work) faster IRL for free!”, reads part of the event’s description.
The ferry’s direct link between Greenpoint and Lower Manhattan shortens the usual East River route that takes riders from Greenpoint to two stops in Williamsburg and another in DUMBO before reaching Wall St./Pier 11 in Manhattan.
The Firefox Fast Ferry will also have free coffee, snacks, and other surprises on board.
Additional events and activities are set to take place on board. The Firefox ferry taking off at 10:30 a.m. on Nov. 14 from Pier 15 will feature a ride with Mozilla’s executive team. The same ride will be offered at 10:45 a.m. in Greenpoint. A Firefox engineer will also lead a separate presentation aboard the ferry from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. on Nov. 14.
San D’Simone, a holistic health and happiness coach, will provide guided meditation rides during the three days, with a session on Nov. 14 from 4 p.m to 5 p.m., from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Nov. 15, and from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Nov. 16.
A self-defense session for online and “IRL” will also take place aboard the Firefox ferry on Nov. 16 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. The hands-on training will be led by David Ordini, a Krav Maga instructor. Participants will also leave with a kit to help them stay safe online. Interested attendees must RSVP for the ride.
A panel set for Nov. 15 will feature five internet activists talking about the world wide web as a tool for social change. The event, aboard the Firefox Fast Ferry, will take off from Pier 15 at 6 p.m. and run until 7 p.m.
The Firefox Fast Ferry is provided by Hornblower, the company chosen by the city’s Economic Development Corporation to run the NYC Ferry service.
Representatives from Mozilla and Hornblower did not immediately return questions on the three-day launch.
