The MTA is scrapping one of two free Williamsburg shuttle buses that had been set to last for the duration of the 15-month L train construction project, citing low ridership.
The two shuttle buses—the B91 and B92—will be consolidated into one B91 shuttle starting June 8 which will have an updated route focusing on connecting the Marcy Avenue J/M/Z station with the Bedford Avenue L train station.
Ridership on the two original shuttles was extremely low, according to the MTA, with an average of just two or three riders per trip.
The B91 and B92 have been operating over the past five weeks along a looped route, with the two buses running in opposite directions. The route went from the Bedford station to the Metropolitan Avenue/Lorimer Street G/L station, to the Marcy Avenue J/M/Z. The B92 had one additional stop at the Hewes Street J/M station.
Despite the J and M lines seeing a 60 percent increase in riders travelling over the Williamsburg Bridge, straphangers appear to largely be opting out of using the shuttle bus and instead are heading straight to the subway stations to start their public transit commutes, the MTA said in its weekly L train construction newsletter.
The new shuttle route, which will go into effect on June 8, will make stops at Bedford Avenue and North 6th Street, Grand Street and Driggs Avenue, the Marcy Avenue J/M station, and Grand and Roebling Streets. The bus will run every eight minutes during peak travel times, and will run every 10 minutes late at night and early in the morning.
