Greenpoint resident Dr. Kate McGilloway has recently opened an orthodontic practice in the neighborhood specializing in the oral alignment of teeth and jaws for children, teenagers, and adults.
Her practice, Greenpoint Orthodontics, is located at 254 Driggs Ave. and has been in the making since 2017. She opens after spending years working at at a nearby dental clinic.
McGilloway, who goes by “Dr. Kate,” has practiced orthodontics for more than a decade. The mother of two, who volunteers at a local elementary school, felt that opening a practice in the neighborhood was the best way to give back to the community she has called home for the past six years.
“Orthodontics is not only about straightening the teeth,” Dr. McGilloway said. “It also offers better function, ability to clean, longevity, and aesthetics for our patients”
Dr. McGilloway believes her new office fits in perfectly with Greenpoint’s growing community.
“I wanted to offer a service that’s progressive, high-value and affordable. A common theme that appeals directly to the diverse population that is Greenpoint,” she said.
Financial accessibility is also an important component of her practice, which is why she is proud to accept more PPO plans that most orthodontists.
“When I started working in Greenpoint almost five years ago, I was shocked to find that most local orthodontists did not accept PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) plans.” she said. “Many families were traveling far distances just to utilize their insurance benefits. That’s why I made it a priority to ensure that I was in-network with most PPO health insurance plans to provide more convenient and accessible treatment.”
Dr. McGilloway adds that another one of her priorities, unlike most dentists working at corporate chains, is to tend to her patients through the entire length of their treatment.
“A lot of clinics tend to hire dentists right out of school, who frequently bounce from practice to practice. But as a perfectionist, I want to be personally involved in each patient’s care from start to finish,” she said. “You will see me at every single appointment.”
The office space itself was also personally designed by Dr. McGilloway, with a vibrant and cheerful vibe—a departure from the sterile environments often associated with dental offices.
Large, pop-art inspired frames with mouth and teeth motifs hang throughout the office, decorated with minimalist furniture and a bright red, white, and black color scheme.
“I wanted to make it a fun space that patients looked forward to visiting” she added.
Greenpoint Orthodontics is open Monday through Saturday by appointment, and also offers 24/7 emergency availability. Services include traditional braces, modern ceramic braces, Invisalign, habit-breaking therapies and appliances like palate expanders. Consultations are always free.
