The MTA will be shutting down L train service this weekend between Manhattan and Brooklyn in preparation of the 15-month shut down scheduled to begin in April.
This weekend’s closure will be the first of 15 weekend shutdowns prior to the line’s 15-month closure between Brooklyn and Manhattan to repair the Canarsie Tunnel.
Service will be down from 11:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 10, until 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 13, although trains will run between Broadway Junction and Canarsie-Rockaway Pkwy.
The MTA said the weekend shut downs between the boroughs will help it prepare for the 2019 tunnel work. The weekend closures will take effect this weekend, then all weekends in October, two in November and several in February and March.
The weekend work will help crews prepare for next year’s tunnel reconstruction and ensure that the service in Brooklyn during the 15-month period is efficient. The MTA, in regards to the tunnel, will be digging elevator shafts and creating entrances at the 1 Av station so workers will be able to move construction materials during the shutdown.
During the weekend closures, the MTA will be offering free shuttle service along every L train stop in Brooklyn and enhancing subway and bus service in Manhattan and Brooklyn, the agency said.

“Our crews are working hard on track and signal infrastructure during periods of lower ridership [weekends] so that while the L train tunnel is reconstructed and we run in Brooklyn only next year, it’s the most reliable service we can deliver on the line,” said NYC Transit President Andy Byford.
The MTA is closing the tunnel between Brooklyn and Manhattan in order to repair extensive damage caused by Hurricane Sandy in 2012. The tunnel suffered extensive damage to tracks, signals, switches, power cables throughout the two tubes that connect the boroughs.
The city will be providing a number of measures for commuters during the 15-month period, such as Select Bus Service on 14th Street, which officials estimate will carry 50,000 additional daily riders. These buses will be scheduled to be no more than two minutes apart during peak hours.

We will be lost in 2019 without the L. So give more riding weekends in 2018. Buses will be packed, traffic will be horrible. Get another plan, especially holiday weekends.
