Greenpoint’s Mexican foodie haven Oxomoco has earned itself a coveted Michelin star—just five months after its opening.
Michelin released its highly anticipated list of starred restaurants on Monday, adding Oxomoco to a long list of New York City restaurants that have been awarded a star.
Oxomoco, whose name refers to the Aztec goddess of the night, opened in June at 128 Greenpoint Avenue to rave reviews.
The menu’s biggest draw is its tacos, with eight different kinds to choose from. A few larger plates like a ribeye and grilled branzino are also on offer, as well as some smaller bites like tostadas and smoked mangos.
“Much like the space, the cooking here is fun and vibrant, backed by a wood-fire oven used to incredible effect,” the Michelin review reads. “Inspectors were impressed with the level of care put into everything from the tacos to the can’t-miss desserts.”
The restaurant is owned by childhood friends Chef Justin Bazdarich, best known for his popular pizzerias Speedy Romeo in Clinton Hill and the Lower East Side, and Chris Walton, a restaurateur and real estate professional.
Walton and Bazdarich were together when they received the call telling them they would be awarded the Michelin star—a first for both of them.
“We were just humbled and honored to be included in the list,” Walton said. “It’s one of those situations you don’t expect and it’s a tremendous honor, and it’s a really important moment for us and our team.”
Walton and Bazdarich chose to set up shop in Greenpoint after an exhaustive search of Brooklyn properties.
“A lot was based on the neighborhood and the architecture and just the quality of the real estate,” Walton said. “We found this little gem of a building in Greenpoint between historic buildings and landmark buildings, and when we walked in, we just knew.”
Neighboring Williamsburg restaurant Aska kept its two Michelin stars, while Meadowsweet and Peter Luger maintained their one-star ratings.

More power to them. I ate there, the prices were outrageous and the food was only ok.
However, I am not a farm to table, gluten free, organic, locally grown, gourmet, gourmand, cutting edge diner. Just give me other restaurants in the area for half the price.
They did do a fantastic job of redoing the old hardware store. They must have put a fortune into it. That is basically what you are paying for.
I agree Ive eaten there twice, all the food was very fresh but I honestly can’t recall one item I ate there. Good service but nothing I would be returning for.
