A new special waste site will be opening in Greenpoint in the coming weeks as the city closes operations on an existing drop off site in south Brooklyn.
The Department of Sanitation special waste site, the only one in Brooklyn, will be opening on June 9 at 459 North Henry St., the current site of a DSNY Storage Yard.
The new location, at the northern tip of Greenpoint, will be a place where residents can drop off an array of harmful products to be disposed of or repurposed. Examples of accepted items at the site include batteries, motor oil, fluorescent light bulbs, and passenger car tires.
New York City law prohibits residents from throwing out the above items and other electronics with regular trash.
The site, while fixed within Greenpoint’s industrial zone, is solely for residents, and does not accept items from commercial drivers or companies.
The DSNY told the Greenpoint Post that because the site only caters to residents, truck traffic, as a result, will be minimal.
“A collection truck, operated by our electronics vendor, will collect electronics once a week,” said DSNY spokesperson Dina Montes. “Other materials will be picked up once a month by a truck.”
The new special waste site replaces the current site in Bensonhurst, which will be closing on June 2. Montes said each city borough has a special waste drop-off sites for residents, and that the prior Bensonhurst location will be used as a marine transfer station for solid waste.
The special waste drop off site is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. every Saturday and the last Friday on the month.
