An “indie-industrial” menorah will light up Greenpoint Avenue this weekend during an outdoor “Lights and Latkes” ceremony.
The 8 p.m. ceremony on Dec. 8, hosted by the Chabad of Greenpoint, will see a large menorah lit outside 68 Greenpoint Ave. at the Pencilworks co-working space.
The menorah’s candles will be lit one by one with tiki oil, with hot latkes, chocolate coins and glow-in-the-dark dreidels to go around.
The industrial menorah was designed as an art piece several years ago by “Leviticus”, a Brooklyn-based artist.
It’s structure is made out of recycled and repurposed materials, and was welded together in Flushing, Queens.
Leviticus has conceptualized street art for the Chabad of Greenpoint in the past, and brought the idea of a public installation of the menorah to Rabbi Yisroel Nissim of the Chabad of Greenpoint.
“The message of Hanukkah is a very simple one and one that is very powerful,” said Rabbi Nissim. “You deal with darkness of the night with light—by kindling the light, by adding light. Once you have light, you don’t stop—you add another light, which is the continuation of good and an increase of good.”
