An 82-year-old Williamsburg man was killed over the weekend after he was struck by a van while crossing a street just one block from his home.

On March 9, at around 5:42 p.m., Evaristo Mercado was crossing in the marked crosswalk at the intersection of Bushwick Avenue at Maujer Street when he was hit by a northbound 2004 Ford van making a left turn onto Maujer Street, police said.

EMS responded to the scene and transported Mercado to Woodhull Hospital with trauma to his legs. At the hospital, he later succumbed to his injuries.

The driver of the van, 57-year-old Mark Smith of Virginia, was arrested and charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian causing injury, unlawful possession of marijuana, and failure to use due care causing injury.

Mark Smith was shot already a,few years on block 4, he was ordered to stay away from Williamsburg houses and still he was always around selling whatever, cops would stop him and do nothing, he should have never been around Williamsburg houses in the first place, your dad was loved by many people. Hope and pray your family gets justice, had they (the cops of PSA 3) make sure he wasn’t in Williamsburg houses, for sure your Dad would have been alive today, no one in Williamsburg like Mark Smith. He thinks he is invincible. But this time he is not going to get away with this. Prayers ?for your family. My deepest condolences ????
