Firefighters battle Monitor Street blaze (FDNY)

FDNY firefighters have been battling a four-alarm fire at a warehouse in Greenpoint for nine plus hours, already leaving five members injured as they continue to work to douse the flames, fire officials said.
The blaze began around 12:30 a.m. inside the first floor of a two-story restaurant supply warehouse at 259 Monitor St. Five firefighters suffered minor injuries and were transported to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center, according to the FDNY.
As the FDNY worked to put it out, the flames only grew stronger and rose to a four-alarm fire by roughly 2:20 a.m. when more support was brought in. About 200 firefighters and EMS personnel were on scene, according to officials.
FNDY Chief of Fire Operations Thomas Richardson said the warehouse’s interior set-up made it difficult to locate and put out the fire.
“The fire was deep seeded and difficult to locate. In a large open warehouse with multiple aisle spaces, it’s difficult to maneuver a hose line to the location of the fire,” Richardson said. “Firefighters were operating in the building for approximately one hour. Due to safety concerns, we transitioned to an exterior attack with three tower ladders.”

As of 10 a.m., FDNY was still on scene, fighting to put out the inferno for the ninth hour. The cause of the fire is currently unknown.
