A wildly popular Valentine’s Day tour of a wastewater plant in Greenpoint sold out within 20 minutes, the city’s Department of Environmental Protection said Tuesday.
The DEP’s annual Digester Egg Tour, which takes place at the Newtown Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant in Greenpoint, filled 360 slots by 12:20 p.m. on Tuesday—registration opened at noon.
The tours have been increasing in popularity since they began back in 2012, with tickets selling out in less than five hours in 2018.
People took to Twitter to voice excitement about being one of the lucky few to snag a spot.
Those who secured a coveted tour spot will get an overview of the wastewater treatment process, before enjoying unobstructed views of the city skyline from a 120-foot-high, glass-enclosed observation deck located at the top of the eggs.
The treatment plant, located at 329 Greenpoint Ave., processes 310 million gallons of wastewater every day, turning the organic material removed from the sewage into fertilizer. It was first opened in 1967 as the city’s largest sewage treatment facility.
