A Frida Kahlo-themed restaurant serving Mexican dishes has opened its doors on Manhattan Avenue.

Friducha, the name of the corner restaurant, opened on Saturday at 946 Manhattan Ave., with a menu full of staples prepared in house like tacos, burritos, enchiladas, fajitas, and guacamole-based dishes. Main dishes are priced between $10 and $16.

The restaurant, at the former site of La Taverna, sits about 35 people, and is steadily decorating its walls with quotes, images, and all things Frida Kahlo, who has been a major source of inspiration to Sandra Lopez, the restaurant’s co-owner.

“Her love, Diego, would call her Friducha,” Lopez said, explaining the restaurant’s name. “She’s my hero.”

Lopez, who last worked as a waitress up until the restaurant’s opening, dreamed of opening her own place since moving to Brooklyn from her native El Salvador 10 years ago. The search for a perfect place finally took off a year ago with her brother and husband, co-owners of the restaurant.

“I was looking for a neighborhood where it could be welcome, and I felt like Greenpoint was a good place,” she said. “I love the area.”

The restaurant plans on offering margaritas, tequila-based drinks, Mexican draft beers, and a custom cocktail menu once it receives its liquor license.

Friducha is open from midday until 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and until 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, with plans to open for brunch in the near future.

We are proud of Sandra and her partners, such an example of what Latinos are made of, dreams and hard work, no matter where we come from.
Congratulations!

Op-ed | New York’s ground lease co-ops: Our families can’t wait any longer

Jan. 14, 2025 By Michael Tang

Last December brought a long-awaited victory for New York City. Our City Council adopted the historic City of Yes housing plan, paving the way for more than 80,000 new homes by 2040 with the promise of affordability. As a longtime resident of Flushing, Queens, I naturally welcomed the news – it’s a much-needed reprieve for New Yorkers as housing costs continue to soar in the midst of an unparalleled housing crisis. But entering 2025 on the heels of this win, we residents at  Murray Hill Cooperative remain at risk — our lives are virtually unchanged because we belong to the last class of unprotected “tenants” as ground lease co-op residents. Without legislative action, more than 25,000 New Yorkers face the threat of losing their homes — homes that we own — to landowners seeking to raise our ground rent to astronomical rates.
