State Sen. Daniel Squadron, representing the 26th Senate District with neighborhoods including Greenpoint, Williamsburg, Cobble Hill, and Lower Manhattan, will step down from his position on Friday.
The announcement came with an op-ed in the Daily News and a post on his website on Wednesday, where Squadron revealed his plans to be more engaged with states across the country in an effort to steer national politics, a goal he says cannot be accomplished if he stays at his current post.
“After much reflection, I have decided to lend my hand to make a difference in states across the country, pushing policies and candidates that will create a fairer and more democratic future,” Squadron wrote in a post on his website.
Sen. Squadron said he has thought about national politics since the November presidential election, but was also inspired to leave his post after witnessing the “status quo” New York state government “thwarted” by special interests.
“In the state Senate, for example, Democrats have repeatedly been denied control of the chamber by cynical political deals, despite winning an electoral majority — including in 2016,” he said in the Daily News op-ed.
He added: “Once considered laboratories of democracy, too many states have become petri dishes of corruption; rather than increase economic opportunity, they serve the most opportunistic.”
While unclear in the details of his project, Sen. Squadron said he will be working with Adam Pritzker, an entrepreneur, and Jeffrey Sachs, director of the Earth Institute of Columbia University, according to the Daily News op-ed.
Elected in 2008, Sen. Squadron said by stepping down now he is ensuring there is enough time for his seat to be filled in the upcoming November election.
